On 10 May 2026, PHOTOFAIRS Shanghai announced its annual awards. As Asia’s most influential fair for image-based art, the four ‘META’ prizes – Meta Link, Meta Wave, Meta Hommage and Meta Hip – scan the current ecology of contemporary image art from four dimensions: curatorial power, pioneering spirit, classic heritage and public resonance.
This is not just a list of winners; it is a declaration of value about where Asian image art is heading.
🔗 Meta Link – Curatorial Power as Discourse
The Best Booth Award went to Galleria Continua. The prize honours the gallery with the most integrated curatorial vision, compelling presentation and innovative display. Galleria Continua wove works by four distinct artists into a multi‑dimensional conversation on faith, society, nature and existence. In a limited space, it released immense intellectual density and emotional energy – proving that curatorial power is itself a rare creative force. The gallery receives a special booth at Tokyo Gendai.
🌊 Meta Wave – Pioneering as a Probe into the Future
The Emerging Artist Award was given to Hedda Roman (represented by ThisThat Gallery). The award recognises young creators who demonstrate breakthrough visual language and strong future potential. Roman’s cross‑media practice – photography, video, text and generative images – continually questions the mechanisms and perceptual boundaries of images, blurring reality and the surreal. She is a true “probe into the future” and will receive an international residency to further her pioneering work.
📜Meta Hommage – Classics as a Never‑Fading Foundation
The Hommage to Classics Award went to Gladstone Gallery for its solo presentation of Robert Mapplethorpe. The award honours international galleries that present historically influential work with sustained exhibition quality. Gladstone presented Mapplethorpe’s first solo project in a Chinese art fair, covering his iconic portraits, nudes, still lifes and late landscapes – a complete survey of a legend. The gallery will receive dedicated promotion through Supermedia Group’s magazines.
❤️ Meta Hip – Public Resonance as the Touchstone of Art
The People’s Choice Award, based on feedback from on‑site visitors, collectors and media, was given to Chen Jianfei (represented by HART Gallery). Chen’s unique style merges calligraphic sensibility with photographic language, generating strong emotional resonance. He will be offered a special exhibition at KYOTOGRAPHIE.
A complete ecosystem of image art is taking shape: from Galleria Continua’s cross‑dimensional dialogue, through Hedda Roman’s boundary‑pushing inquiry, to Mapplethorpe’s revisited classics and Chen Jianfei’s calligraphic expression – the four prizes map a full spectrum: the classics and the avant‑garde coexist, international vision resonates with local innovation.
PHOTOFAIRS Shanghai is defining more and more clearly the value coordinates of Asian image art today and tomorrow. The four ‘META’ prizes may well be the keys to that future.
From 7–10 May 2026, the 11th edition of PHOTOFAIRS Shanghai was held at the Shanghai Exhibition Centre. Nearly seventy galleries, institutions and partners from around the world gathered, bringing together over a thousand still photographs, moving images, installations and mixed‑media works in 5,000 square metres of exhibition space. From the “INSIGHTS” section honouring 50 years of the Düsseldorf School, to special units like PERFORMANCE and PERSPECTIVE that responded to contemporary issues, from strong sales by first‑time exhibitors to masterpieces by Vivian Maier, JR and many others – the fair answered the call of our times and engraved new value coordinates for Asian image art.
Thank you to every participant. In 2027, let us meet again at the Shanghai Exhibition Centre!
